Yoga for Children
Everyone knows that yoga is good for you – even those who are not quite sure exactly what it involves! Yoga has so much to offer children, but most importantly for them, it is fun. Yoga is a complete form of exercise which develops stamina, strength and flexibility. Childhood is becoming an increasingly stressful time for our children and attending a regular yoga class gives them a chance to take some time out.

A typical class will include postures which are modified to become fun for children to practice. A child’s Downward Facing Dog will have a name and bark. Our Cobra makes a loud hissing sound! They will practice some gentle breathing and relaxation techniques which they are encouraged to use at stressful times in their lives. All of this is done in a non-competitive environment which allows every child to participate equally.

But what makes yoga classes different from other movement-based activities incorporating music and games, like Gymboree? Besides the immense physical and mental benefits, a central tenet of yoga practice is respect and honour: for ourselves, for each other, and our environment. In a yoga class, children often go on a magical journey around the world, and learn about many cultures and places. Since many of the yoga poses are of animals, children also learn about different animal habitats, endangered species, and even recycling!

So the children learn the importance of looking after their bodies and health in a fun and innovative manner. Yoga builds confidence by creating a balance between strength and flexibility in their bodies. The youngsters are introduced to yoga games and partner work and learn about relaxation and stillness. A 2003 study by the University of California of children in a Los Angeles school found that children who had frequent yoga instruction saw significant increases in children’s self esteem, as well as overall fitness, academic performance, and even a decrease in discipline problems as students felt more relaxed and were more respectful of their peers!

Parents are very welcome to come and take part in this class. It is held on Thursdays at 5pm in the Ormond Suite and its €10 per class - no bookings required.
